Reflecting on insights from palliative care providers caring for young adults with cancer: An opportunity to enhance our approach
Abstract
Adolescents and young adults (AYA), aged 15 to 39 years, who are undergoing cancer treatment face a range of psychosocial challenges that require specialized attention. At present, our institution lacks a dedicated program to address the unique needs of this patient population. Similarly, palliative care consult teams that frequently interact with AYA patients often find themselves without the necessary resources to support them adequately. This article delves into three key areas: an analysis of the palliative care consultation team’s (PCCT’s) database to understand the referral patterns of AYA patients; a reflective case study of an AYA cancer patient that posed significant personal and professional challenges to the author clinicians; and an exploration of strategies clinicians can employ to prioritize self-care and maintain resilience.
